How to Give Your Child an Academic Boost
If your child is struggling with a particular academic subject, you might be at a loss about how to help them. Even if your child is doing well in school, you may still want to give them an academic boost to enrich their learning experience. If either of these applies to you, read on for some tips and tricks to make learning fun.
Games
Learning doesn't have to be boring or serious. Gameplay can help children grasp difficult concepts. If your child is struggling in math, for instance, do an internet search for online math games. Choose a few that fit your child's interests, and go through the games with your child the first time or two. You might also play some board or card games with your student. Boggle or Scrabble are useful in practicing spelling, while many card games, such as 21, involve elements of math.
Nature Time
You can also give your child an academic boost by getting them outside into nature. Go on a nature walk and bring along a book about birds so the two of you can identify the various species. You could do the same with trees, insects, and flowers. Talk about the weather, too, and introduce your little one to the basics about clouds, wind, temperature, and precipitation. Your child won't even be aware they're getting a science lesson.
Experiments
Another great way to help your child learn science is to plan a series of fun experiments. Do some research online, and select a few that look especially interesting. You might make a volcano or a storm in a glass, or you might grow crystals or write in invisible ink. Be sure to explain the science behind these activities, too.
Art and Music
If your child shows an interest in art or music, it's important to encourage that. Consider enrolling your student in an art class or music lessons in Gilroy. Provide plenty of materials for drawing, painting, and clay sculpture. Create playlists that let your child sample different styles of music, and purchase an inexpensive keyboard or guitar.
Reading and Writing
Finally, be sure to give your youngster a firm foundation in reading and writing. Let your child see you reading, and read to them frequently. If they're old enough, encourage them to read to you, and take turns. Don't forget to discuss what you've been reading, drawing out a story's most important themes, examining its plot, and analyzing its characters, for example. Encourage your child to write as well. Show him or her how to keep a journal, or provide a topic for a short story or poem. Write along with your child, and compare your work.
A Solid Education
As a parent, you have the responsibility to make sure your child receives a solid education. You might find it beneficial to take some classes in education to learn more about creatively presenting lessons and to hone your own skills and knowledge.
