Understanding Services:  Teacher for Students with Visual Impairments

A teacher for students with visual impairments (TVI) is a trained professional who provides specialized instruction and support to students with visual impairments. The TVI works closely with the student, their family, and other members of the education team to ensure that the student has access to a quality education that meets their unique needs.

The TVI is responsible for conducting the FVA/LMA (Functional Vision Assessment/Learning Media Assessment). This assessment determines if the student’s visual impairment affects the student’s ability to learn, and if it does, what needs to be put in place to mitigate those affects. The FVA/LMA will include a statement of eligibility, including likely need for braille instruction.

The TVI provides instruction in a variety of areas, including braille, adaptive technology, and social skills (these are all aspects of the expanded core curriculum). They may also work with other teachers to modify curriculum materials and provide guidance on how to effectively teach students with visual impairments.

In addition to providing direct instruction to the student, the TVI also plays a crucial role in advocating for the student’s needs and ensuring that they have access to the support and resources they need to succeed. This may involve working with school administrators to secure funding for specialized equipment or services, as well as providing guidance on how to create an inclusive classroom environment.

Overall, the TVI is a vital member of the education team for students with visual impairments, providing specialized instruction and support to ensure that these students have access to the education they deserve.
