For parents of children with visual impairments, it can be difficult to know whether their child needs a teacher for students with visual impairments (TVI). While every student is unique, there are certain indicators that may suggest that a TVI would be beneficial for your child.
Some common indicators that your child may benefit from a TVI include difficulty with activities of daily living, such as dressing or grooming, difficulty with orientation and mobility, difficulty with accessing information, and difficulty with social skills.
If your child is struggling in any of these areas, a TVI may be able to provide specialized instruction and support to help them succeed. The TVI can work with your child and other members of the education team to identify specific areas of need and develop an individualized plan to address those needs.
The TVI will conduct an assessment called a Functional Vision Assessment/Learning Media Assessment (FVA/LMA). This assessment will determine if and how a child’s visual impairment affects their ability to learn.

Even if your child is not experiencing significant challenges, a TVI can still be a valuable resource for ensuring that your child has access to the support and resources they need to succeed. If you are unsure whether your child needs a TVI, consider reaching out to your child’s school or a specialist in the field for guidance.
