Accommodations for students with visual impairments are an essential part of creating an inclusive learning environment. Consulting the IEP is the best way to begin to understand the unique needs of your student and to ensure that those needs are met.
In the meantime, here are some examples of accommodations that can help to ensure that students who are blind have equal access to educational opportunities:
Braille materials: Braille textbooks, workbooks, and other materials can be essential for students who are blind to participate fully in classroom activities. There are services available that will convert classroom material to braille (both digital and hard copy/embossed). There are also services available to create recreational material for your student.
Audio materials: Audiobooks, podcasts, and other auditory resources can be a valuable alternative for students who may not be able to read printed materials. Choose platforms that allow the listener to change the rate of speech to ensure better listening comprehension.
Tactile materials: Manipulatives, tactile maps, and other hands-on resources can help to make abstract concepts more concrete and accessible.
Assistive technology: Screen readers, Braille displays, and other assistive technologies can help students to access digital content and participate in online activities.
Personal aids and services: Orientation and Mobility specialists (O&M), Teachers of students with Visual Impairments (TVIs), and other professionals can provide additional support and guidance to help students who are blind to navigate the classroom and access the materials and information they need.

It’s important to note that accommodations for students with visual impairments may vary depending on the needs of the individual student, and it’s important to work closely with the student and their family to determine the most effective accommodations. By providing the necessary accommodations, you can help to ensure that blind students are able to fully participate in the classroom and achieve academic success.
